Customer Reviews: does the job BUT heavy!!January 26, 2007 yosemite sam 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
the picture is very deceiving...the actuak splitter is longer 'in person' than in the pic. and the head in the pic looks axe-like; narrow. but the head is like the head of a bull dog...short and wide.
i used it on some stubborn wet bull pine, that my 6#maul gets stuck in. this thing whipped thru. but it is heavy and hard to get an overhead swing. E=MC2..so without the speed the energy is less on hitting the wood.
i then tried on some wet 'live oak'. this stuff is like steel, dulls my chain saw blade in minutes..dense is minimal a term. the splitter did not make a dent. but merely bounced off. which actually is an improvement as my lighter narrower maul gets stuck. and then hard to get out. when this live oak dries i am sure the splitter will do fine.
so it is heavy and exhausting. i can go about 1/2 as long as with the 6# maul. so i will use this one for the stubborn stuff. once it is cracked i will switch to the old maul of mine.
i think the combination of the two will do well.
the splitter is made very well, very rugged and i can not see it breaking. nit like the oak handled maul of mine. i seldom break the handle but time dries out the wood and causes it to split. i will use fiberglass next time...better yet i should not leave it out all year long, esp to dry out and split the wood handle.
i would think a perfect combo would be an 8# head and a 36" handle...all made just as the lickety splitter is...steel.
i am 66 and maybe when younger the heavy weight would not be so challenging...but even so i guarantee you will be more tired with it than with a 6 or 8 pound head. and at a tad less than 20 it is a real bargain i think.
heavy maulApril 26, 2007 S. brower(NY) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Picture looks like a hatchet. but when it comes it is a full size heavy duty maul. It appears to be indestructable. It doesnt get stuck, it is too wide to bury itself unless the wood splits. If it doesnt split the wood it bounces off. The handle is long enough.
You do however use alot of energy and physical strength to generate the speed to use it effectively.
It seems to me to be well made, and of sound design.
